Battleship USS California preparing to set sail for the West Coast, Norfolk, April 16th 1939.

Stern view showing three Curtiss SOC-3 scout-observation float planes. California still has wire-cage masts as a major modernization planned for 1939 was cancelled when war started in Europe. Following her sinking at Pearl Harbor, she was refloated on March 25th 1942 and departed for Puget Sound Navy Yard on June 7th for a major refit during which her cage masts were replaced with modern tower masts.
